Otolith Chemistry Reflects Frontal Systems in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current

چکیده
Pronounced environmental trends across fronts suggest that the otolith chemistry of oceanic fish can resolve zones on either side, promoting application to population questions at similar spatial scales. Trace and minor elements laid down immediately prior to capture—along the edges of otoliths from Patagonian toothfish Dissostichus eleginoides—discriminated frontal zones in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Mean values differentiated sampling areas by up to 2.6 standard deviations, suggesting: (1) otolith Mg/Ca enrichment related to fish activity around the Burdwood Bank; (2) Mn/Ca enrichment associated with South America; (3) Sr/Ca linked to the presence of Circumpolar Deep Water; and (4) Ba/Ca to nutrient production and mixing. In the Polar Frontal Zone, meanders or eddies may account for affinities with neighbouring sampling areas, bringing water from the Subantarctic and Antarctic Zones onto the North Scotia Ridge. Moreover, fish age showed a significant relationship with depth and improved cross-validation by 14%, giving 85% classification rates to South American and Antarctic regions, and 57tο 83% to areas along the Patagonian Shelf. These results indicate that otolith chemistry reflects hydrography, detecting oceanic gradients across the slope of continental shelves and between zones separated by strong trends like fronts.

Meridional displacement of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.
Observed long-term warming trends in the Southern Ocean have been interpreted as a sign of increased poleward eddy heat transport or of a poleward displacement of the entire Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) frontal system. The two-decade-long record from satellite altimetry is an important source of information for evaluating the mechanisms governing these trends. While several recent studie...

[1] Topographic meandering of Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) is found to be an impediment in the propagation of Antarctic Circumpolar Wave (ACW) in the Indian Ocean sector of Antarctica. Reasons for this are attributed to the southward advection of the ACW anomalies associated with the topographic meandering of the ACC. The southward meandering of ACC facilitates warming up of the region e...
متن کاملA pivotal role for ocean eddies in the distribution of microbial communities across the Antarctic Circumpolar Current
Mesoscale variability and associated eddy fluxes play crucial roles in ocean circulation dynamics and the ecology of the upper ocean. In doing so, these features are biologically important, providing a mechanism for the mixing and exchange of nutrients and biota within the ocean. Transient mesoscale eddies in the Southern Ocean are known to relocate zooplankton communities across the Antarctic ...

[1] Satellite data show that oceanic eddies generated in the Southern Antarctic Circumpolar Current Front (SACCF) are associated with increased phytoplankton biomass. Cyclonic eddies with high chlorophyll a concentration (Chl-a) retain phytoplankton within the eddy cores and increase the light available for photosynthesis in the upper mixed layer by limiting vertical mixing and lifting of the i...
متن کاملThe Influence of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current on the Oceanographic Setting of a Sub-antarctic Island
1he circulation in the Southern Ocean is dominated by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACe), which is the only current that flows completely around the globe. The ACC is a complex system consisting of narrow regions of sharp horizontal density gradients, which extend through the entire water column as frontal bands separated by broad zones with less intense gradients. Meridional excursions fr...
